Five things send you a DM
The same five notifications as your Boords inbox, on storyboards and scripts.
- Someone @mentions you
- In a comment on a storyboard or script.
- Someone replies to your comment
- Including clients replying on a review link.
- Your comment is marked complete
- When someone else marks a note you left as complete.
- Your comment is reopened
- When a completed note of yours is marked incomplete again.
- A comment on work you follow
- Any new comment on a storyboard or script you follow, including comments from clients on a review link.
Your own actions never send you a DM, and one comment sends you one DM at most.
Set up once per team
An Owner or Admin installs the Boords app, then each person connects their own Slack account.
Step 1: An Owner or Admin installs
In Boords, go to Settings, Account, Notifications, click Install and approve the Boords app in Slack. Once per team. Whoever installs gets DMs straight away.Step 2: Everyone connects their own account
Each person clicks Connect on the team's row, or Connect Slack on the banner in Boords, and approves their own Slack account.Step 3: Send a test
Click Send test and Boords sends you a test DM in Slack.
Not an Owner or Admin?
- Click Notify admin on the same page and Boords emails your team’s Owners and Admins to ask them to install it.
Good to know
How Slack DMs fit around the rest of Boords.
- DMs only
- Each DM goes only to the person the notification is for. Boords does not post in Slack channels.
- Approvals
- Storyboard approvals don’t send a DM. To tell your own systems when a client approves a storyboard, use webhooks.
- One workspace per team
- Each Boords team connects to one Slack workspace. In more than one team? Connect on each team’s row.
- Long comments
- Slack shows the first 500 characters. The link opens the full comment in Boords.
- Sent DMs stay as sent
- If a comment is edited or deleted later, the DM in Slack keeps the original text.
- Access
- DMs follow your Boords access. Lose access to a project and its DMs stop.

An Owner or Admin on your Boords team, from Settings, Account, Notifications. Anyone else can click Notify admin, and Boords emails the Owners and Admins for them.
Only people who connect their own Slack account, and each person only gets DMs for their own notifications. The person who installs is connected straight away.
No. Clients on a review link don’t have a Boords inbox to connect. Their comments still reach you in Slack when you follow the storyboard or they reply to your comment.
Yes. Mentions, replies, completed and reopened comments, and comments on scripts you follow arrive the same way as for storyboards.
Slack DMs are separate from email, so connecting Slack doesn’t change your email settings. A DM is sent as soon as the notification is created, while comment emails arrive as a digest about every 10 minutes.
Your team's row shows the connection as expired and DMs pause. An Owner or Admin clicks Reconnect to restore them.
Click Disconnect on your team's row in Settings, Account, Notifications. Your Boords inbox carries on as before, and you can reconnect later.
